How to rewire your SN95 Mustang coupe fog light circuit to work independently from the vehicle lights.

This method is done in a way that is easily reversible for a coupe.

First, I need to give credit to Brian Carr who documented a good way to rewire SN95 fog lights here: http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/hitech/rdtch1.htm

A convertible will still need splicing per Brian's how to.

I did not want to cut and splice the wires in my console harness, so I got a donor harness to get access to the connector pin I needed to make a plug in jumper wire to do the same circuit in an easily reversible way for a coupe.  I also got a small spade lug to plug into the convertible top connector.  You will be connecting the Purple/Orange 12V (when key is on) wire from the convertible top switch connector to the Red/Black female connector in the fog light switch.

However, the blade of the spade lug was a bit too wide to fit into the narrow female pin in the convertible switch connector, so I ground down the spade lug with a bench grinder to make it narrow enough to fit.

Then I popped the red plastic cover off the donor harness connector:

Using a probe, I pushed back the gray plastic tab and pulled the female pin from the connector:

Now you need something to safely cover the 12V power connector you will pull from the fog light switch connector.  If you don't, you will cause a 12V short to ground when you turn on your lights.  I found a small plastic cover that just fit over the connector.  A piece of shrink tubing that fits over the connector would also work.

Now it is time to pull the wire out of the donor harness in order to make the jumper cable.  You will need to unwrap the black tape off of the donor cable, and cut the wire near the other connector:

Strip the cut end of the wire in preparation for crimping the narrowed spade lug on it:

I crimped it on and added a zip tie to the kit for holding the plastic cover in the wire I will be removing from the fog light switch.

Now you are ready to move into the car.  Pull the front rubber bumpers from the console container to expose the two screw that hold the console bin in place, remove the screws and pull out the bin:

Here is a picture that shows how the unused convertible top is held inside the console of the coupe:

Put one hand into the console to pop one side of the fog light switch out and put the other hand through the E-brake slot to pop the other side of the switch out.

Unplug the fog light switch from the connector.  This is actually a little difficult as the hooks that hold the connector on the switch are pretty tight:

Remove the red plastic cover from the connector:

Remove the female pin connected to the Red/Black wire from the connector and cover it to prevent a short circuit when the vehicle lights are on:

Put the female connector of the jumper wire you made from the donor cable back into the same spot that you removed the connector on the Red/Black wire.  Put the red plastic cover back on top of the connector.  Make sure you put the female connector pin of your jumper wire back into the same spot you took the old female connector from or you will wonder why your fog lights will not work.

Put the fog light switch back onto the connector and pop it back into the console:

You might notice that I have two fog light switches in my console.  The front one controls the fog lights, but the back one controls a relay that switches between my radio and my iPod.

Run your jumper wire over to the convertible top switch, plug it into the female connector on the Purple/Orange wire and clip the connector back into place:

I zip-tied the jumper wire to the adjacent cable to provide strain relief to prevent the jumper cable from being accidentally pulled out of the convertible top switch connector.

Put the console bin back in, re-install the screws and rubber bumpers back in.

Here is the switch with the ignition key on and the fog light switch on:

And here is the result from the outside:

Since the switch is only energized when the ignition key is in the On position, it is impossible to drain the battery because you left the fog lights on by mistake.

The hardest part of this exercise was finding a donor cable.

FYI, here is a diagram of the fog light switch:
