11-17-07:

In order to do the mild Port and Polish work I want to do, the heads need to be disassembled.  I took apart the passenger side head tonight and documented the process.  It will be almost identical for the other head.

First you will need three special tools: a cam clamp to prevent the cams from turning, and exhaust spring compressor and an intake spring compressor.

Clamp the special tool to the middle of the cams and torque the bolts to 15 foot pounds.

Remove the intake camshaft bolt, washer and spacer as well as the exhaust cam bolt, washer and sprocket.

Remove the cam clamp special tool.

Find a pin that will fit in the little hole in the cam chain tensioner.  I used a little nail.  Compress the cam chain tensioner and insert the pin so it will stay compressed.

Remove the timing chain and sprockets.

Remove the cam chain tensioner.

I use small Ziploc bags and a Sharpie to mark the cylinder number, intake or exhaust and front or rear to ensure I put all of the valve train components back together exactly the way they came apart.  For each valve, do the following: (You will have to use the cam bolt and a wrench to turn the cam to ensure it is on the base circle for the valves you are working on.)

Using the valve spring compressor to remove the spring pressure, remove the cam follower.

I then used a strong magnet to remove the lash adjuster.

Compress the valve spring, ensuring that the valve stays up.  This pushes the valve spring and its retainer down the valve stem, exposing the valve spring keepers.  I used a magnet to pull the little keepers off the valve stems.  I dropped the keepers into the bag,

Pull the spring and retainer off of the valve.  I used a twist tie to hold the retainer on the spring and dropped the assembly into the bag.

Pull the valve out of the head.  I wrapped it with a small paper towel and put it in the plastic bag.

At this point, all of the valves and their associated hardware should be out and in each of their associated marked Ziploc bag.

Remove each cam bearing cap.  Make a note of where each cam bearing cap assembly goes since they are not interchangeable.  Also make a note where each bolt goes in each cap assembly as the bolt lengths are not all the same.

Remove the cams.

The head is now disassembled and ready to be worked.
