Association of Tiger Owners, to some degree, under the rather broad umbrella of, Tigers
East Alpines East and in the "land down under"
through the Sunbeam Owners' Club - NSW.
Expansion of this service is on-going, albeit moving way too slowly for
some. I've elected to include the home locations for these vehicles, to help emphasize the sphere of the project.

Feral Felines
The introduction of the 1966 Sunbeam Tiger was accompanied by several subtle improvements to the basic package. Sadly, none of them addressed the fragile vehicle identification system, which remained unchanged through the end of production.
When this Ford powered, Series V was offered for sale, the cowl displayed no ID elements at all and the seller made no claims of heredity. However, a closer inspection found the CA Title representing a regular production Tiger - no doubt the original paperwork from the hapless donor. This one didn't slip through the cracks and the "Registry" now lists another junked Tiger chassis number.
Moving on to celebrity row, here is the somewhat famous, "Art car". The low part of this story has to do with the law enforcement officer owner, who elected to recoup his loses rather than put an end to the deception. That action lead to several aborted transfers of ownership before catching an unsuspecting, out-of-the-loop enthusiast, flat footed. The car was used for a brief time, but brought little pleasure to its guardian. Other life pressures forced a quiet departure from the ranks of the active and left us waiting further developments.
Another blemished star, whose glitter faded only after several years of leading the high life. The glory days saw many a trophy for excellence of craftsmanship and tender loving care. But once dethroned, the desire to divest was insatiable. Passing it on, even with full disclosure, simply postpones the day someone else will gasp when given the truth. This car should have had its identity correctly registered with a State assigned number and that would have been the end of it.
One of the more recent “pretenders” follows an all too familiar pattern. After a life of relative seclusion, this
Canadian creation emerged as one of the auction items listed for the popular Monterey
Sports Car sell off. The initial caution
was a mismatch of ID elements - a body (JAL) tag that pointed to a much earlier
production than represented by the chassis (VIN) plate. Such anomalies are not unheard of, but in
this case they were sufficient to shift the auction company into “PASS”. After some rather loud finger pointing, the
thwarted seller arranged for an inspection, only to confirm deeper
skullduggery. The long and short of
it ends with a Series V Alpine, carrying just enough Tiger to go to the ball,
but no ticket to stay for the dance. During
its most recent California outing (1/02) it was chatted up as a proper,
1966 Sunbeam Tiger Mk 1A, with a rather hefty $25,995.00 premium. Upon

asked for and received additional evidence
of sullied lineage. In his words, "...I had purchased this
automobile from a legitimate auction company. The car appeared legitimate at
the time of purchase and I apparently and unfortunately was fooled..."
To those who might question, as I do, the naiveté referenced in
the above statements, I point you to the March issue of Sports Car Market

Our owner/seller continues, "...After I had purchased the car you sent me an e-mail
advising me that it was not a legitimate Tiger. After I received your original
e-mail I immediately took all available steps to make full disclosure that the
car was utilizing a Sunbeam Alpine shell in which the Tiger components had
been installed. I then took further steps to satisfy myself regarding your
allegations about the cars origins. Once I had satisfied myself that the car
was in fact questionable I went back to the auction company and insisted that
they buy the car back because I felt it had been sold to me under false
pretenses. They did in fact buy the car back from me, but at substantially
less than I paid for it..."
Once again, a car that really should have been stripped of its pretense
was returned to the very conduit that allowed it to surface in the first
place.
Reports from other parts of the world reinforce the growing importance of logging the authentic survivors. Club showings in Europe often contain an admitted 30 percent dilution and the numbers seem on the rise. If you can believe any of the latest "Registry" correspondence, much of the corrupted U.S. product is being successfully exported to all corners of the planet. In the long run, if we do nothing to stop it, such activity shames us all.
